Please read other reviews on older model SD-P1700 and you'll see that Toshiba didn't do anything to correct the fundamental problems but just changed the model number. BEWARE and don't buy Toshiba.
It's funny that the "most useful" review on here starts out by saying "I bought this two weeks ago." Well, I've had it for about a year and a half, and the lithium ion battery will not charge anymore. My recommendation: Don't buy this--spend a bit more and get a much more reliable unit. So do I buy the new battery for half the cost of the original or just junk it.
I called, and the cost of a new battery is $60 (plus shipping and tax). Also, the power on switch tends to flip on in your bag/backpack, which leaves you without power when you want it. I called Toshiba, and of course they said that it's outside the warranty period, so call the parts distributor.
I opt to junk it because the battery life is only about 1 1/2 DVD's.not great on a long-haul flight. When I told Toshiba it was clearly a faulty battery, he said what was my charging method.I said, well, I purchased this unit because it has a lithium ion battery that doesn't have to be drawn down completely before being recharged to maintain full charge. He pretty much ignored that and then gave me the distributor's phone number.
Finally, the menu doesn't work sometimes--hard to explain but it will just not come up and I have had to start some DVD's from the beginning again as it didn't hold the spot. Oh, and Toshiba's customer service is not good.
This product was very picky on DVD since the first day I bought it. I did not return it since it could play a DVD that my baby daughter especially like. But after six months and just a few times use, now it just refuses to play ANY DVD, and says "invalid disk". Believe me, It would be a mistake to buy it.
So far it's been an excellent unit, very reliable and easy to use, with no problems. I mostly got this little model so that I can watch videos while in transit, between classes, and at the gym. Since I'm a film student, there are a lot of movies I need to squeeze into my schedule and this seemed like a good way. My only two complaints are that I haven't been able to buy additional batteries for it -- nobody, not even ToshibaDirect, seems to bother carrying them -- and the claim that this model could handle.avi and Divx files has turned out to be incorrect. All in all, though, it's doing what I need it to do, and doing it very well.
I bought this player and at first I was very pleased with my purchase. The player freezes whenever you least expect it and the remote is horribly designed. The sound was good, it was light, and the screen was nice and big, but.after a few more uses I found that the screen pixelated every time the scene it was playing was in the shade or dark. Also, I would put in a DVD (that I had played before and had been crystal clear) and it either wouldn't play at all or it was so pixelated I couldn't watch it. If you press the pause button twice it goes into step and then you have to search for the play button. All around, I returned it and I wish I had stayed with my old Coby, even if it was falling apart.
